Hydraulic, Environmental, and Mechanical Performance of Porous Asphalt Mixtures: A Comparative Analysis
Abstract
The objective of this study was to comparatively analyze the hydraulic efficiency, environmental performance, and mechanical behavior of conventional and modified porous asphalt mixtures. A systematic review of 65 scientific articles was conducted, complemented by a descriptive statistical analysis to identify behavioral patterns in response to pollutants such as heavy metals, nutrients, and hydrocarbons, as well as their mechanical response under climate variability. The results show that mixtures modified with recycled materials, fibers, and mineral additives exhibit superior performance, with increases of up to 15% in structural stability and mechanical strength, along with removal efficiencies ranging from 60% to 80%, consistently outperforming conventional mixtures. Likewise, mixture design significantly influences permeability, structural durability, and pavement service life. Taken together, the findings demonstrate that modified porous asphalt mixtures constitute a viable technical solution for the design of sustainable and resilient urban pavements, integrating hydraulic, environmental, and structural benefits, and contributing to efficient urban runoff management and the development of road infrastructure adapted to current climate conditions.
