Sepic Converter: Comparison of Cascade and External Control
Abstract
This paper detailed a comparative study between two analog control techniques: direct control and cascade control applied to the output voltage regulation of a SEPIC. The research developed the model of the converter in the state-space domain, derived its small-signal transfer functions and designed PID controllers based on the pole-placement method such that the dynamic response was optimized. Furthermore, the examined system functions at a nominal power of 3.2 kW which makes it a promising option for distributed power generation systems. All simulations were done in Matlab® / Simulink™ software platforms. The two control strategies were designed for a switched model of the converter with distributed components that more closely represent the behavior of the hardware. The evaluations make it clear that cascade control will reject DC input voltage disturbances better than direct control. It was observed that under static operating conditions, the controlled system had a 10 ms settling time which met the performance requirements. Additionally, it decreased the inductor L1 current overshoot during output signal transients, by 68.92%. The results demonstrate cascade control's effectiveness in diminishing perturbations and improving system stability. Ultimately, the work demonstrated cascade control as a viable and efficient regulation solution with a significantly improved dynamic response and a more consistent operating reliability of the SEPIC converter.
