HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention: Barriers and Progress after Surgery in Colombian Women
Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause abnormal cellular changes, including cervical cancer. In Latin America, sociodemographic factors limit or allow preventive actions in the population. Objective: To evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices for the prevention of HPV and cervical cancer pre- and post-intervention in Colombian women. Materials and methods: The sample consisted of adult women from different regions of Colombia. A non-experimental study was conducted with pre- and post-intervention evaluation without a control group on five aspects: knowledge, attitudes, practices, mental health conditions, and overall satisfaction. Results: A total of 641 women aged 30 to 59 years participated, predominantly in urban areas and low socioeconomic strata. The majority had primary or secondary education and were in a common-law relationship or married. Regarding knowledge about HPV, the post-test showed significant improvements, especially in the identification of the virus and its relationship with cervical cancer. Regarding attitudes, the majority expressed willingness to engage in self-care and acceptance of vaccination, although the influence of partners on Pap smears and vaccination was significant. Regarding practices, more than 80% did not use condoms, and a high percentage had not been vaccinated. Regarding mental health, 9.2% reported anxiety or depression, and 3% reported substance use. Overall satisfaction with the intervention was high, with positive evaluations regarding clarity of objectives, learning, and treatment received. Conclusions: Although the educational intervention improved knowledge about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer, attitudinal and practical barriers that hinder prevention persist. Strengthening intersectoral strategies is key to overcoming economic, sociocultural, and access to health obstacles in the care of women in Colombia.
