Abstract

Roads in any country are fundamental for urban development, impacting safety, health, employment, and economic opportunities. Their maintenance is essential to keep corridors operational, preventing accidents, setbacks, or unfortunate disruptions. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as essential tools for pavement management, enabling the graphical visualization of road conditions and facilitating data-driven decision-making. These systems integrate data from Pavement Management Systems (PMS) and leverage technological advancements to optimize planning and maintenance. This study focuses on implementing a GIS to conduct a detailed road inventory in the Cajicá-Tabio section, Cundinamarca, Colombia, and to assess the condition of the road from K0+000 to K2+000 using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI).
The implementation of GIS aims to optimize the use of public resources and improve the planning of maintenance interventions. In Colombia, road management is handled by different administrative levels, and the lack of updated road inventories has hindered project execution. This project proposes a solution through the creation of an updated geospatial database and an intuitive interface for decision-making. In summary, the implementation of GIS and the PCI methodology will enable more efficient management of road infrastructure, improving the quality of life for residents and optimizing the use of public resources in the Sabana Centro region.
The results showed that out of the 52 evaluated segments, 37% were classified as “Very Poor”, 38% as “Poor”, and only one segment achieved an “Excellent” rating. This classification enabled the definition of specific actions such as routine maintenance, rehabilitation, or reconstruction, and was spatially represented using GIS, thereby optimizing decision-making.
