Abstract

Jumping ability is an essential quality in ballet that requires adequate training to optimize performance and also, to prevent injuries in its practitioners. Although plyometric training (PT) is known to be effective in improving jumping ability in many sports, its use in ballet is scarce. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of PT on vertical jumping ability in ballet students from the Teatro del Bicentenario, in Argentina. Three women (21±1,63 years; 1,68±0,05 m; 55,70±3,35 kg; 17,33±1,69 years of experience in ballet, yeb) and three men (21,67±0,47 years; 1,74±0,07 m; 65,70±6,01 kg; 12,03±5,71 yeb) performed 3 countermovement jump tests on an instrumented treadmill that recorded the ground reaction force, before and after 3 weeks of PT. From this signal, performance variables (pv) describing the vertical jump dynamics were then calculated: height, momentum at takeoff and RSImod. Statistical analysis based on a paired samples t-test (p <0,05) and Cohen's d effect size indicated for the female group and after PT, significant differences in all pv: d ≥0,8. Compared to the female group, the mean values of all pv after PT were higher in the male group, with no significant difference (d <0,8). In conclusion, 3 weeks of PT showed different effect on vertical jumping ability in the female and male groups of ballet students.
