Abstract

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a relevant indicator for evaluating the level of development of a population, and its use is increasingly widespread in the literature on development and public policy planning. This article estimates the Human Development Index (HDI) for the City of Cali (Colombia), following the traditional methodology proposed by the UNDP, which allows evaluating the evolution of development levels in the first two decades of the 21st century. This estimate is contrasted with an alternative version of the HDI in which the variable "Gross Domestic Product Per capita" (GDP) is replaced by the variable "Economically Active Population" (EAP) as an indicator of the decent standard of living dimension. In both cases, the calculations reveal an important advance of the city with respect to the levels of development achieved.
