Use of Serious Game to Assess Changes in Functional Fitness, Cognition, and Emotion in Older People
Abstract
Background and objective: Physical exercise activates physical fitness; it is a protective factor against neurodegenerative diseases such as cognitive impairment, benefiting the quality of life of older people (EP); Serious games can be used to promote the health of this population. The aim of the study was to identify changes generated in functional physical condition, cognition and emotion in older people through serious games. Materials and methods: 4 older people performed 9 sessions of physical exercise using UAM physical/functional training software. Initial/final assessment tests were used for physical condition, cognition and emotion. Results: SPPB increased the mean score by 0.5; grip strength improved (3.5 and 5.5 kg); agility (0.18 and 0.47 s). The Moca and PANAS tests increased the rating in all variables in score and positive affect: 6 points and negative decreased between 1 to 4. Conclusions: Serious games could promote the functional physical condition, cognition and emotion of older people.
