Abstract

Two fundamental areas in the field of civil and social engineering can be combined to positively impact comprehensive disaster risk management: social cartography and slope stability. Social cartography emerges as an innovative tool that combines community participation with geographic knowledge, facilitating the creation of maps that reflect the reality and needs of communities. This approach, which has been implemented and developed in various academic and field projects, proposes an inclusive and collaborative methodology.
The knowledge that the inhabitants of a region have of the physical space they occupy facilitates the identification of areas prone to the occurrence of mass movements, thus helping the proper management of resources that seek to characterize the terrain and implement mitigation or protection measures against these events.
Thanks to the experiences acquired in the social cartography workshops held in some municipalities of the Near Southwest of Antioquia, we seek to conclude how this tool can help in the management of risk due to mass movements.
