Impact of Land Cover Change on Water Regulation Capacity in the Cuja River Basin, Colombia

Abstract

The development of socio-economic activities represents a challenge to guarantee the ecosystemic functionality of national watersheds because most of them are based on the availability and variability of water resources. The transformation of the landscape associated with anthropic factors affects the water regime in a way that is sometimes unknown. For this reason, in the present study, through statistical hydrological and remote sensing analyses of vegetation cover, the incidence of changes in vegetation cover and precipitation on the regulation capacity of the water regime of the Cuja river basin, department of Cundinamarca, Colombia, was analyzed. The results obtained showed that the watershed per se does not have a good water regulation capacity, due to clay soils with a predominance of eroded soils and pastures. The multitemporal analysis of satellite images showed that in recent decades, anthropic land cover associated with urban areas and crops has expanded, and pasture cover has been displaced by degraded soils. However, the dynamics of vegetation cover in the watershed do not have an impact on the water regulation service at the 0.05 significance level. In addition, the projects of payment for environmental services of a conservationist type in the basin represent 0.45% of the total area of the basin, and their effect on the regulation service is not appreciable. The results obtained do not indicate the absence of a correlation, but rather its insignificance so far. Considering the importance of watershed integrity and the role of vegetation cover in this aspect, the importance of monitoring vegetation cover together with the increase of payment projects for environmental services of the restoration type is highlighted.
