Abstract

Climatic variation changes rainfall with lower volumes but higher intensity, accompanied by prolonged droughts, increased temperature, and increased sea level in coastal areas, inducing salinity of irrigation water and soils. The ‘Magdalena River’ cultivar, known as Hilaza, is a mango recognized in Colombia for its tolerance to salinity; however, it fluctuates according to the ecotypes of each region. Therefore, the aim of this article was to evaluate the behavior of five ecotypes (ECO) of the cultivar to the application of water with sodium chloride with different saline concentrations (EC <1084 µS.cm-1, 1084 µS.cm-1, 2163 µS.cm-1, 4031 µS.cm-1 and 7631 µS.cm-1). In 20 kg pots and a randomized block design, aerial, root, and total biomass, dry mass, salt tolerance index (STI), foliar nutrient content, and soil interactions were determined for 160 days. The results showed no significant differences in the variables measured and allowed to verify that ECO3 and ECO5 showed the highest STI (2.59 and 1.81, respectively) and the reduction of foliar phosphorus and nitrogen contents, with the increase of sodium and calcium, this last element being essential to attenuate the adverse effects of NaCl. At the soil level, the percentage of exchangeable sodium as an indicator of soil salinity increased. The study’s results have practical implications because the potential benefits obtained with ECO3 and ECO5 for their incorporation in plant breeding programs were significant, and they are attractive in increasing mango tolerance to saline conditions in the dry Colombian Caribbean
